My first job in London...The Budweiser House Party for CAKE

This was such a cool summer job way back in 2002, I remember their premises - an old church in Kensington - got SO HOT they had to buy fans from Homebase to keep everyone cool and under control.

Amazing colleagues, loads of celebrities, our events and other parties every week and quality media coverage made this the best introduction to working in London ever.

Thanks for the free drinks, the tent, frisbee and cool job, I'll never forget it! Here is their case study for the project from the website www.cakegroup.com

Turn your property into an ad... Target style

Check out this Mother for Target NYC Fall 2010 clip. They turned the windows of The Standard Hotel, on the Highline, into a giant entertainment fashion show for the night.

On a smaller scale, why not ask your local hairdresser or fashion store to do a 'show' on your balcony or roof terrace? Would work perfectly on those appartments opposite the Salsbury Pub in Queens Park on a late summers drinking evening!

Mendoza, Argentina - rich in both wine and design

They love it here. And their city is so cool as well.... beautiful parks... well designed streets and colonial architecture set around old plazas.

They know how to add smart details to modern houses too. Like the floating concrete stairs on this entrance and the recycled railway sleepers set upright and used to make this driveway.

I also liked a few of the logos for Le Petit Printers and the Kato Cafe. Smart.

Its been a long time since anything caught my eye.... Salta, Argentina

Equador, Bolivia and Peruvian people don't go in for design, unless you count adobe bricks and corrugated iron as features, but at last in Salta, these two are straight out of Monocle magazine....

Angular, Austrian looking and built to say 'don't even attempt to break into me'

They were perched up on the mountain side with towering views of Salta city below and the teleferico taking weekend city dwellers up to the lofty peaks above.

Using Bamboo for outdoor lighting

Sorry about the quality of these pictures, it was hard to get the night exposure with the little camera.

In a beach club in Monterrico, Guatemala, they used 20ft lengths of cut bamboo and small bamboo plants to carry light upwards.
This illumination was really effective at outlining the path whilst delivering a cool eye catching effect.

Simple idea using local materials, worked a treat.

How to build a deck on a roof

This is a great example of how to turn a pitch roof into a sundeck. This one on a guest house in West End, Roatan, Honduras has no safety guard and falls a sheer 40ft onto the beach.
That aside, its a very neat example of how a deck can easily be fitted to a roof to make a fun sunning area.

Tulum

Around 700AD the Mayans built Tulum.

It was the last of the great sites built to and used as a key trading position to ship produce up and down the Mexican coast.

Its in a stunning position, and if I were to build a warehouse and office.... I couldnt think of a better vantage point.
The sea is perfect and the sand like sugar.

Hip Hotels - Playa Del Carmen

This hotel in Playa Del Carmen uses simple lighting and a gigantic video wall playing Casablanca on loop throughout the night.

The pool has AWAY FROM YOU spelled out on tiles below, and out of the picture there is a decked bar with cabanas and neon strip lighting.

The hotel group also have a place called Basico two blocks away and one in Mexico City called, The Condessa. All are very habitable.

Sky Gardens

The owners of this apartment block in Mexico DF have taken vertical gardening to a new level. Really nice to see in a city full of cars, ozone and concrete....

Seat on the Street

This is cool. A tiled bench with a garden built into the back. Seen on the street in Condessa, DF. Mexico.

Recycled Vertical Garden

The Mexicans are a resourceful nation, here is another great example. This vertical garden not only made a great fence, but the plastic bottle containers filled with soil stack perfectly and the gaps allow small plants and mosses to grow. Ingenious.

Tree in a bench

This tree provided shade and greenery to an otherwise basic concrete bench. The street had these lining either pavement on a 100m stretch. Street Smart.

Stylish paintjob in Guadalahara

This bakers had a really fresh clean feel in a ritzy suburb of Guadalahara, Mexico.

Stunning Bathroom Fittings from Mexico

The mexican company Helvex produces high quality, durable bathroom fixtures and fittings. They come in traditional and contemporary designs. Would be great in the UK.

Outdoor Garden Innovation

We bumped into this urban garden in old Mexico City.
They had turned a paved area into a oasis of green by filling shallow pots with grass for seating, water and pond life. Everyone, young and old was enjoying the experience.
Most interesting of all was the recycling of oil drums into homes for giant bamboo.
